    Els Poblets
    Els Poblets

In the north of the province of Alicante, in the Marina Alta region, just a few kilometers from Deçute;nia, lies the small town of Els Poblets, a Spanish municipality in the Valencian Community. Agriculture is still practiced today on the flat land, which was formed by the alluvial deposits of the Girona River, particularly the cultivation of olives, almonds, wine, and citrus fruits.

The picturesque little village lies close to both the mountains and directly on the Mediterranean Sea. Although tourism has expanded considerably over the years, the village has retained its rustic and charming character.

The history of Els Poblets, The Villages, dates back to Roman times. Today, an old watchtower and the remains of a Roman villa stand as witnesses to bygone eras. Els Poblets originated from the merger of three villages: Setla, Mirarosa, and Miraflor. In the 17th century, they first united under the name Els Llocs, The Places, but later separated. On May 6, 1971, they reunited and adopted the name 'Els Poblets', The Villages. Particularly noteworthy are the two churches in the town: the Iglesia de Sant Josep and, above all, the Parroquia del Salvador, which houses the statue of El Salvador (the Savior), the town's patron saint, who is deeply revered by the locals. An old legend tells of sailors who once threw the statue overboard. After a long and stormy voyage across the sea, they finally sighted land. To thank God for their rescue, the crew sacrificed the statue to the sea. Miraculously, the statue was later found on Almadrava Beach. It lay beside a rock whose shape resembles a praying Christ. Since then, the inhabitants of El Salvador have chosen him as their patron saint and dedicate a grand festival to him every year on August 6th. The patron saint festival in Els Poblets begins on July 28th and differs fundamentally from the festivities known, for example, in Austria. The festival lasts for a week. The festivities include bull runs, paella nights, a funfair, correfocs (fireworks displays), street parades, pilota tournaments, and the Moors and Christians' exhibition fight. The celebrations reach their peak on August 6th, the 'Day of the Savior'. On this day, the townspeople are awakened by a despertàacute (a wake-up call) with firecrackers. This is followed by street parades, a procession, and a holy mass in honor of the patron saint. The festivities conclude each year with a spectacular fireworks display.

Els Poblets includes a roughly one-kilometer-long stretch of coastline with fine pebbles washed down by the river and clear water. It begins at Punta de Almadrava, the mouth of the Girona River, and ends in a pine grove. There is a sandy beach to the right of the Girona River, and a fine dune beach begins around kilometer 11. In times past, the rocky coves attracted large schools of tuna. Fishermen used strategically placed nets to block their access to the sea, driving them into shallow waters. The fish that gathered there could then be easily caught. This type of fishing is called 'almadraba' in Spanish, and that's how the beach got its name, 'Almadrava'.

On the Almadrava coastline lies an important Roman archaeological site, a reminder that the Via Augusta, the ancient trade route along the Mediterranean coast, once ran through this area. The site comprises the foundations of an aristocratic Roman villa and a pottery workshop, complete with all its associated structures: clay storage rooms, workshops, and workers' quarters. The excavation site is located on Las Marinas and is enclosed by a fence. Also worth seeing is the Torre de Mirarrosa, a 15th-century defensive tower that guarded access to the town via the Girona River. Today, the three-story, eleven-meter-high tower serves as a viewpoint. In 1985, it was declared a National Cultural Monument. Due to the mild climate—temperatures range from 11 degrees Celsius in January to 33 degrees Celsius in July—and the proximity of the sea and the mountains, many foreigners have established second homes here. Els Poblets is particularly attractive to Germans. The construction of numerous housing developments along the coast has made tourism the municipality's most important economic sector. The town council also provides a number of amenities for tourists. For example, a community center for cultural events and performances has been established, which also houses a library with literature in several languages, including German.

    Sports and leisure activities:

The other leisure activities leave nothing to be desired. Besides a wide range of water sports, Els Poblets offers its visitors and residents green spaces, numerous public sports facilities with indoor and outdoor courts, tennis and squash, as well as an indoor and outdoor swimming pool. However, as is usually the case in Spain, the outdoor pool is only open during the summer months. In addition to regular swimming, swimming lessons for children and adults are offered, as well as other activities such as water aerobics.

Horse lovers can enjoy the 'Los Caballos' riding stable, which welcomes both experienced riders and beginners. Golf enthusiasts will appreciate the nearby 'La Sella' and 'Oliva Nova' golf courses. Restaurants, cafes, shops, the pharmacy, doctors, and other amenities are all easily accessible. It's a village where you can't help but feel at home and where you'll find everything you need.
